Pedro Mariano - Race Director turned rider

As the FIM Race Director at all EnduroGP World Championship competitions, Mariano’s connection to enduro sport is arguably a little more involved than it is for many of the other riders in the FIM Enduro Vintage Trophy. But, just like those he is racing against, it is his passion for enduro and love of riding that sees him roll back the years, get back on a motorcycle and get involved in his home vintage trophy event.

“Normally, I’m working for the FIM as an official at EnduroGP events and the ISDE. I am very close to modern day enduro, but as a former racer I wanted to ride in this event and not work at it, like I do at many, many races. Thankfully, that has been possible, so I get to enjoy the race as a competitor.

“I can say I finished my riding career in 1995, on a Husaberg 350. As soon as I knew this event was coming here to Portugal, I decided to compete, straight away, on my Husaberg 350. So, I’m going back to where it all ended for me, not a re-start, just a return to the bike and the memories from the year I stopped racing.

“I’m competing in the Open class because the bike is a 1991 model. I have several old Husabergs, they are very special bikes. My main goal is to have fun and enjoy the race. I don’t get too many opportunities to ride nowadays, so to grab this opportunity with both hands, and ride with friends, that is what the vintage trophy is all about.”
