Germany cemented their position at the head of the Vintage Veteran Trophy competition in this year’s FIM Enduro Vintage Trophy (EVT) with a winning result on Day Three in Piekoszów, Poland.
- Germany extend lead in Vintage Veteran Trophy classification
- Changes to the leaderboard among podium contenders
- Competitors face physical day of racing in Polish sand
With Day Three marking the second half of this year’s FIM Enduro Vintage Trophy (EVT), competitors repeated the course and special tests from yesterday. High temperatures and rough, sandy terrain ensured most riders welcomed the finish line at the end of their one-hundred-and-thirty-kilometre-long day.
Continuing to stamp their authority on this year’s Vintage Veteran Trophy class, Germany enjoyed another winning result on Day Three. The trio of Bert von Zitzewitz, Johannes Steinel and Uwe Weber extended their lead to almost five minutes, with just tomorrow’s Final Special Test remaining.
France were again the second-best team to Germany on Day Three. It will be a tall ask for them to overhaul their rivals for victory with just one day remaining, but they are determined to fight on until the finish.
The fight for the final step of the podium saw further changes on Day Three. Trouble hit the Czech Republic, tumbling them down the leaderboard to sixth when they lost Rudolf Kavsky to a mechanical failure.
As a result, host nation Poland now moves into podium contention. They hold a twenty-minute advantage over Switzerland in fourth, with the Netherlands completing the top five.
“The liaison sections were beautiful today,” tells French team rider Francis Mace. “The course is so nice to ride, I think we are very lucky. The tests are a challenge, I’m riding an 80cc Fantic bike, so I don’t have a lot of power in this sand. But the hardest part is now done and I can look forward to tomorrow.
“We are second overall. It will be a perfect ending to this race if we can finish on the podium. But for sure, we will celebrate tomorrow, whatever the result!”
The individual classification saw the United States’ Fred Hoess extend his advantage with victory on Day Three. The Husqvarna rider finished thirty-two seconds in front of Germany’s Bert Von Zitzewitz, with Italy’s Tullio Pellegrinelli taking third.
Close battle for Vintage Silver Vase honours
In the Vintage Silver Vase competition, it is all to play for between Pantera 1 and Moto Club Team Italia. Pantera 1 are leading by four seconds with just the Final Special Test left to decide things.
MC Bergamo MX Line Team lie third but are now over two minutes behind the leaders. They do enjoy a three-minute-and-twenty-second advantage over Moto Club Scuderia Norelli in fourth. Team Kramer completes the top five.
In the Vintage Club category, US Leonessa D’Italia 1903 have a virtual grip on the winner’s trophy, thanks to a five-minute-and-forty-one-second lead. The Czech Classic Enduro Team Club 1 are second, but only have a one-minute-and-twenty-second advantage over MC Ohrdruf in third. Germany Club 4 and Moto Club Alpin 1 are fourth and fifth, respectively.
The ninth-edition of the FIM EVT will conclude tomorrow, 9 August, with the traditional Final Special Test in Wincentów.
