FIM welcomes Iranian initiative to encourage women in motorcycling

Iran is a nation where women have for many years faced restrictions in obtaining motorcycle licences. However, thanks to the efforts of MAFIRI alongside the support of the Iranian government and the Ministry of Sports and Youth, this longstanding issue is now being addressed and positive steps are under way to resolve it.

In line with the FIM’s commitment to promoting diversity in motorcycling, in 2022 the FIM Women’s Commission (CFM) launched the Women in Motorcycling in Arabic Countries Campaign as part of the International Women’s Day 2022 theme #BreakTheBias to give visibility to women motorcyclists in Arabic countries.

The FIM and supporting national federations have also signed The Amman Declaration on Women in Motorcycling that is intended to improve the situation of women in motorcycling in Arabic countries.

MAFIRI permitted female riders to use circuits for training in 2016 and since 2019 female athletes have participated in inter-women competitions and the FIM welcomes this latest initiative.

Maziar Nazemi, President of the Motorcycle and Automobile Federation of Iran (MAFIRI), said: “Issuing motorcycle licences for women, with proper safety measures and necessary training, promotes equal opportunities and encourages social and economic empowerment. The Ministry of Sports and Youth has consulted us on revising Article 20 of the Traffic Law in the Seventh Development Plan.

“After discussions with the federation's board, female coaches, experts and provincial heads, we expressed our readiness to support this initiative. We emphasised that this step, adhering to cultural and safety considerations, has no adverse impact on public interest. Instead, it fosters societal and economic progress for women.

“We are prepared to utilise our nationwide network of female coaches and champions, alongside provincial federations and clubs, to train and assist interested women. Federation tracks will also serve as safe and technical training grounds for this purpose.

“The achievements of Iranian female athletes in motorcycle sports are remarkable. Our women have not only excelled in global motocross competitions, but also participated in the Asia Cup for motorcycle racing for the first time, bringing pride to our nation.

“This initiative, developed in collaboration with female trainers and experts, is a significant step towards enhancing the presence of Iranian women in various sports fields.”
