First event of its kind sees short-distance FIM Land Speed World Records set at Lausitzring, September 21-24.
In a landmark event for FIM Land Speed World Records, the World Speed Trails by SwissPerformance brought racers to the Lausitzring in Germany for short-distance land-speed racing. Ten competitors opted to compete for the quarter-mile flying-start FIM Land Speed World Records, and at the end of the event, eight new records were awarded.
The opening day of competition was slated for Friday, September 22, but it was on this first day of fall that Mother Nature decided to remind everyone that even in a manmade setting, rather than a natural surface such as salt, that she is still in charge. Heavy rain and wet track conditions meant that all attempts had to wait until Saturday, and what a busy day it was for World Speed Trials competitors!
Highlights of the day included Valentin Suchet, piloting a Triumph Speed Triple RR. The FIM Endurance World Cup competitor was accompanied by his brother, Sebastien Suchet (fellow SST racer in FIM EWC) in his attempt, and was successful at a speed of an impressive 286.609 km/h (178.090 mph).
Another impressive number put up on Saturday was from Nina Prinz aboard her Suzuki GSX-R 1000R. She and Andreas Holzer were competing for the same record, and after an all-day battle with Holzer, Prinz emerged victorious with a blistering speed of 306.120 km/h (190.214 mph).
The high speed of the meet, however, went to PS Sport Motorrad Magazine’s Johannes Müller aboard the supercharged Ninja H2R. Backed by Kawasaki Germany, with tuner Dieter Briese and Kawasaki technician Devin Strohmenger, Müller was able to propel his partially streamlined 1000cc Ninja H2R to an incredible 330.766 km/h (205.528 mph), the only competitor of the meet to crest the 200-mph barrier. Müller made a second attempt on a Kawasaki Z H2 for another record, this one in the naked bike class at 292.480 km/h (181.739 mph).
