Finland hosted last weekend the first ever Women in Motorsports conference. The outcomes and the atmosphere of the event got full points from the participants as well as from the organisers.

The FIM Women in Motorcycling Commission Director Nita Korhonen was extremely pleased with this two-day conference. “The first ever Women in Motorsports Conference really exceeded our expectations. It has set the grounds for stronger and wider cooperation among sports organisations and hopefully will influence positively the future. The networking and new ideas gained in Vierumäki will for sure contribute to raising the profile of women in motorsport. I am running out of words when I think how historical this weekend was!
FIA Women’s Commission representative, Tiina Lehmonen is on the same line and added: “The conference was a real eye opener highlighting how important it is to meet each other, listen and learn from each other’s experience. Already now we got plenty of new ideas and we are excited to include them in our future plans. We definitely need to get more sports organisations on board!”
The conference gathered participants from 25 different countries representing all continents: representatives from Columbia, South Africa, Zambia, Japan and Australia made the trip to Vierumäki. Almost 40 speakers, including the top names of motorsports as well as experts from the sports field shared their experience and expertise on a wide array of topics, including sponsorship, media, training and coaching as well volunteering and education. The conference also welcomed stars from other sports like Cross-Country Skiing World Champion and Olympic medalist Aino-Kaisa Saarinen, Finnish women’s Ice Hockey team’s Head Coach Pasi Mustonen and Emma Terho 5-time Olympian Ice Hockey player and member of the International Olympic Committee.
On Saturday evening, the conference guests were invited to a gala dinner in Lahti at Sibelius Hall during which the book “Dream Big” was launched. This unique book includes the incredible stories 42 female pioneers in motorcycling from all over the world. The event got support from the Finnish Government with Foreign Trade and Development Minister Mr Ville Skinnari joining the gala dinner as well as the Mayor of Lahti, Management of the Finnish Motorcycling Federation SML, new MotoGP circuit KymiRing and Dorna Representatives.
“I am proud that Lahti Region hosted this high level international event. Having people from 25 different countries coming to our region is amazing, Mr Skinnari rejoiced”.
FIM President Mr Jorge Viegas was impressed by this two-day event: “For the first time ever the FIM has organised in a Women’s in Motorsports Conference. We have had the chance to hear in first hand incredible success stories of women in all positions in Motorsport, showing the way in a men’s world and bringing more gender balance to our sport. FIM will continue working hard to promote equal opportunities for women to compete and work in our sport and when needed to create dedicated competitions.
