After a long lay off due to injury Laia Sanz - Gas Gas returns to action this weekend for the second and perhaps decisive round of the 2012 FIM Women's Trial World Championship in Tramelan, Switzerland where she may wrap up yet another FIM world title.
Sanz explains:
"This is my first proper ride in more than two and half months. At the beginning it looked like I only had to stop for one month, but things got worse as the doctors realised that part of the toe was 'dead' so they needed to take out part of it. That forced me to rest for longer, first while still at the hospital and then at home in the sofa... I lost the European Championship because of that.
"A week ago I had, what I hope was, the last surgery and I think that now it's much better, not perfect, but recovering much faster than before, everything is growing back as it should. (I had part of the bone coming out of the skin and they cut it out on the last operation)."
"During this period of time I practice no sport whatsoever, I tried to ride some ten days ago, but it was too painful and I had to stop. It was all a bad thing, but in the end I was lucky because it was during the summer and the doctor actually told me that I was very close to loose the toe... so it's not totally bad in the end! I have been very lucky during my career for never having to stop due to injury so... Still, I lost the European Championship this year, but I hope I can still ride properly tomorrow."
"I know that I need more time, it would be better for me to wait two or three weeks more, but it's not that bad now so I'll give it a go this weekend although I really need to take it as easy as possible, can't get too anxious about it as then things start to get worse. . It's still painful as it is the foot I use for braking... and then I don't feel physically strong too after stopping for so long."
"Two weeks ago I drove a Renault Clio-Cup on a 24 hours race in Barcelona, it was a team race with another four team drivers. Last year we also competed and won our class, but this year we had some electrical problems and didn't finish. Last week I raced on the Spanish Endurance Championship with another driver and we finished fourth... it was just for fun as with the car there is no danger of hurting the foot. I would love to race cars in the future, but now it's just for the fun of it and to learn..."
