Smolinski set for German GP

German icon Martin Smolinski handed FIM Speedway Grand Prix comeback at German SGP in Teterow on September 10. He is back in the FIM Speedway Grand Prix big time after being unveiled as wild card for the German SGP in Teterow on September 10. The Landshut icon wears the No.16 race jacket for his first World Championship appearance since 2014.

Smolinski qualified for the SGP series via the 2013 GP Challenge and upset the bookmakers’ odds with a sensational win at the season-opening 2014 New Zealand SGP in Auckland. While the Munich-born man was unable to build on that result and finished 12th in the final standings to exit the series, he has qualified for this year’s GP Challenge as he bids to book his return for 2017.

The 31-year-old showed his class with a strong showing for Germany in Event 2 of the Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup at Vastervik on July 26. While the Germans were eliminated on 19 points, Smolinski scored 12 of them with a battling performance. Smolinski is joined in Teterow by track reserves Tobias Kroner and Kai Huckenbeck. The German duo, who line up at No.17 and No.18 respectively, also represented their country in the Monster Energy SWC.

The referee for the German SGP is Krister Gardell from Sweden.
