British rider Bradley Smith finished ahead of the Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) and Italian Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team).
The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider's compatriot cal Crutchlow (CWM-LCR Honda) finished in fourth place, 0.473 sec off the pace set by Smith.
Reigning World Champion Marc Marquez finished in fifth with a 1'33.670 lap, while his Repsol Honda team mate Dani Pedrosa placed 7th, despite just returning to the championship after his arm pump injury. Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) placed 6th.
The Espargaro brothers Pol (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) & Aleix (Team SUZUKI ECSTAR) finished in 8th and 9th respectively, with Yonny Hernández (Pramac Racing) completing the top 10.
The third Free Practice session for the MotoGP riders starts on May 16 at 09:55 local time.
