Podmol takes second Basle night

Libor Podmol served up an outstanding performance in Part Two of a NIGHT of the JUMPs double bill to claim his second victory in this year’s Freestyle Motocross World Championship. In front of a sold-out Jakobshalle in Basel (Switzerland), the Czech FMX star hammered a perfect final run into the dirt. So after six rounds of the FIM Freestyle MX World Championship, the 2010 title winner is back with a vengeance.

Yet to seal this victory, Podmol had to dig deep into his repertoire. He even had to revive his Indy Underflip of old to frustrate the French FMX trio of Remi Bizouard, David Rinaldo and Brice Izzo who were all set to monopolise the podium before Podmol launched into his final sequence. Bizouard looked to have sewn up the top rung with a solid run that included a great Ruler Flip, but it was probably the absence of a 360 that relegated him to runner-up on the night.

After a five-year wait, Martin Koren (CZE) will have been relieved to make it through to a NIGHT of the JUMPS final once again. He fought a titanic battle with Hannes Ackermann who was contesting his third final of 2012, but ultimately it was the Czech rider who prevailed.

In the internal French contest for third place, David Rinaldo executed a flawless and varied final run to edge out Brice Izzo.

Saturday’s win means that Podmol has reduced the deficit at the top to 12 points. Bizouard still leads the standings on 114 points, with fellow Frenchman Brice Izzo in third position.

But perhaps the most sensational result of the evening came in the Maxxis Highest Air contest. At a mere 14 years of age, Luc Ackermann outshone the global high-jump elite of Massimo Bianconcini, Ivan Zucconi und Lukas Weis. Cheered on by the Swiss fans, Luc soared to a personal best of 8.00 metres.

If you weren’t able to see the whole event live in Basel, then tune in to Motors TV on Tuesday at 7.55pm CEST to watch the exciting final and the incredible winning jump by Luc Ackermann in the Maxxis Highest Air. Next stop for the NIGHT of the JUMPS is Munich where an international event is scheduled to take place in the Olympic Hall on 28th April.
