The home pair of Warren Monson and passenger Andrew Summerhayes were the victors at the 2017 FIM Sidecar Speedway 1000cc World Cup in Gillman, Australia. Under a blisteringly hot sun and a temperature of 28 degrees they took a hard fought final in style from defending champions Darrin Treloar and Blake Cox with New Zealander Andrew Buchanan paired with Australian Denny Cox in third place. Another Australian pair of Trent Headland and Darryl Whetstone were fourth despite having been joint leaders after the qualifying heats.
The programme featured 16 outfits and was dominated by riders from Australia and New Zealand with only one European rider, Paul Whitelam, able to compete following the earlier withdrawal of fellow Brit Mick Cave due to injury. USA drivers Joe Jones and Brian Mottis were unable to make any impression on the vastly experienced Anzacs.
To complete a fine weekend, Monson and Summerhayes confirmed their top form by winning the Oceanian Championship at the same track on the following day.
