The Algarve, one of the most stunning regions in Portugal, will host the FIM Sand Races World Cup in Monte Gordo. KiSS Monte Gordo marks the first-ever Sustainability event in this discipline.
The FIM KiSS Programme coordinators accepted the request from the organisers – the Automóvel Club de Portugal, the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António and the Portuguese Motorcycling Federation – due to the excellent results and performance of last year’s race. This year’s event will include a series of actions aimed at protecting local ecosystems and going beyond mere entertainment by involving the local community and government in initiatives that will create a lasting legacy. Specialised experts in the sustainable organisation of events will oversee the activities, with full support from the FIM Sustainability Commission Experts.
The KiSS Monte Gordo Action Plan includes several key initiatives:
Installing dune protection systems to limit the movement of people and vehicles.
Increasing the number of waste bins along the beachfront to collect recyclables, unsorted waste and cigarette butts.
Collecting all types of waste generated during the event, including hazardous waste (e.g. used oil).
Planting 575 trees and 2,000 native shrubs in accordance with the municipality’s afforestation plan to offset carbon and enhance biodiversity.
Installing a vehicle washing area equipped with a containment tank and hydrocarbon separator.
Monitoring the quality of the sand and bathing water before, during and after the event.
Conducting a thorough clean-up of the beach at the end of the event.
Engaging in awareness-raising activities with local schools regarding these initiatives.
Kattia Juárez, FIM International Sustainability Commission (CID) Director, stated: “The KiSS Programme is crucial to our commitment to sustainability in motorcycling. We are delighted to support the Portuguese Motorcycle Federation, the Automóvel Club of Portugal and the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António in organising this race under the principles of our sustainability programme. At the FIM KiSS Monte Gordo Sand Race, we are not just participating in a sport, but leading the charge towards a purpose-driven event. Our initiatives in waste management, ecosystem protection, community involvement and climate action are vital steps in safeguarding our sport for future generations.”
Carlos Barbosa, Automóvel Club de Portugal President, stated: “At ACP, we firmly believe that sustainability is an essential pillar for the success and longevity of our activities, which is why we integrate good environmental practices into all our operations, from internal management to the organisation of sporting events such as the Monte Gordo Sand Race, which we organise jointly with the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António.
“This commitment reflects the club's responsibility towards the environment and society, ensuring that every action we take contributes to a more sustainable future, not only minimising the environmental impact within the motorsport ecosystem, but also inspiring others to follow suit. For this reason we are proud of the international recognition that has now been given by the FIM with the KiSS Monte Gordo the first to be awarded in the Sand Races World Cup.”
Álvaro Araújo, Mayor of Vila Real de Santo António, stated: “The recognition of the Monte Gordo Sand Race by the FIM under its KiSS Programme is a source of great pride for Vila Real de Santo António and highlights our steadfast dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship. As the first event in the FIM Sand Races World Cup to achieve this distinction, we are setting a benchmark for how sport and ecological responsibility can coexist harmoniously. Monte Gordo is not only a stage for thrilling competition but also a sensitive natural area that demands our utmost care and respect. Through innovative practices in waste management, biodiversity preservation and community engagement, we are ensuring the long-term preservation of this extraordinary landscape for future generations while cultivating a culture of sustainability among athletes, teams and spectators.
“This recognition aligns perfectly with our broader vision for Vila Real de Santo António as a destination that harmonises high-quality events with responsible environmental practices. We thank the FIM, the Automóvel Club de Portugal and all partners for their collaboration in making this achievement possible.”
Manuel Marinheiro, Portuguese Motorcycling Federation President, stated: “It is a pride for the Portuguese Motorcycling Federation to witness the excellent work carried out by the ACP and the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, not only in the sporting aspect but, above all, in the environmental sustainability of this event. The protection of biodiversity is crucial, not only for the balance of ecosystems but also to ensure that sports events do not cause irreversible damage to the environment.
“We are aware that the planet is not infinite and therefore the only way to guarantee the sustainability of this event is through the care of biodiversity and the actions that have been and will be taken to protect the environment. This is the behaviour we expect from our Federation's members, as it is essential that everyone understands the importance of preserving local fauna and flora, minimising environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices.
“Moreover, it is an honour to know that the 'KiSS' programme of the FIM for the Sand Races World Cup will take place for the first time in Portugal under the name of KiSS Monte Gordo. This program is a crucial initiative that underscores the importance of environmentally responsible sporting events, ensuring that the competition coexists harmoniously with nature.
“With these actions, we are not only protecting the environment for future generations, but also ensuring that our sports events are an example of responsibility and commitment to sustainability.”
