Jorge Cabezas San Simón 1930 - 2022

Yesterday, at the age of 92, Jorge Cabezas San Simón, one of the key figures in national and international motorcycling of the last century, passed away in Madrid – Spain.

Jorge was a well-known journalist and lawyer in the 1940s and 1950s. In the 1960s he joined the Spanish Motorcycle Federation (RFME) where he conducted important work as head of press and communications, and where he came to direct the Moto Sport magazine.

In the 1970s he was the delegate of the RFME at the FIM Grand Prix World Championships, doing an impeccable job. He also starred in some of the most famous anecdotes in the history of the sport, such as when he helped Ángel Nieto to escape from the Nürburgring Hospital in 1972 to show up on the 250cc starting grid, after a crash in practice.

Cabezas also presented himself as a candidate for the presidency of the first democratic elections of the RFME in 1985 and was vice president during the mandate of Oriol Mauri.

At the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) he held various relevant positions as a member of the Tourism and Finance commissions. He was appointed Vice President of the FIM (1995-2009) and, once retired, he was awarded as FIM honorary Deputy President.

Jorge will be sorely missed by the entire FIM Family, who extends its condolences to his family and many friends.
