For the first time the FIM will have a stand at Salon du 2 Roues, France’s biggest motorcycle show that runs from 7-10 March at Eurexpo Lyon, where a selection of machines spanning its twelve decades of history will be displayed to promote its Heritage programme and present the FIM Certification for Competition Motorcycles.
With the global classic motorcycle scene continuing to grow and flourish, in the framework of its 120th anniversary the FIM recognises the importance of authenticating racing machines, an issue that the FIM Certification for Competition Motorcycles will address.
This first phase will be dedicated to motorcycles competing in circuit racing with machines associated with MotoGP, Superbike, Supersport, Endurance, Formula, Sidecar and also Land Speed Records all qualifying with the only criteria being that they are no longer involved in competition.
There will be four categories of certification – Historique, Evocation, Originale and Replica – with evaluations conducted by an FIM Certification Technical Committee comprising of worldwide specialists in makes, models and eras. Collectors, museums and owners are invited to submit their motorcycles for certification via a comprehensive online application process and, if approved, the motorcycle will be awarded a unique identification plate along with an ID number, a QR code and a certificate.
While the owners’ confidential data will be protected, a database will allow members of the public to access information on all certified machines.
Jorge Viegas, the FIM President, said: “There is no better occasion to promote the preservation and the promotion of motorcycle racing heritage than the 120th anniversary of the FIM. This year marks an important achievement for the motorcycling world’s governing body and opens the door to the path that will lead us to new objectives.
“The future can be brighter if we learn from the past. This is why the FIM wants to protect and share its heritage through the FIM Certification for Competition Motorcycles that presents a unique opportunity for fans to be sure of what they are admiring, a duty of the FIM to certify what it is proposed and a tool that can be used for consultation from professionals and amateurs alike.
“We invite collectors, owners and enthusiasts to propose their motorcycles for certification, creating a worldwide database of competition machinery so that history can be preserved and passed on to future generations."
