The third and concluding Qualifying round for the 2025 FIM Speedway Under 21 World Championship (SGP2) takes place this coming Saturday (7 June) at Debrecen in Hungary where four places behind the tapes in the three-round Final series will be at stake.
- Hungary hosts third and final 2025 SGP2 Qualifying round
- Decisive date in Debrecen for Speedway’s rising talents
- Four places in SGP2 Finals up for grabs in Perényi Pál Salakmotor Stadio
Following two Qualifying rounds last month in Pardubice in the Czech Republic and Glasgow in Great Britain, Saturday’s action from Debrecen will complete the first stage of the 2025 competition to determine the riders who will fight it out for the SGP2 crown.
Regarded as the final stepping stone for the world’s leading young riders who want to make the move into the FIM Speedway Grand Prix (SGP) elite, SGP2 is an integral part of global promoter Warner Bros. Discovery Sport’s mission to develop the next generation of Speedway stars.
The international entry will see eighteen riders from twelve countries and two continents in action in the historic Perényi Pál Salakmotor Stadion where Ukrainian racer Nazar Parnitskyi – who was second in last season’s SGP2 championship chase – will get his title bid under way.
The eighteen-year-old, who won his 2024 Qualifying round in Ludwigslust in Germany, will be in good company with three other veterans of last year’s Finals also in action in Hungary, led by the Danish pairing of Bastian Pedersen and Jesper Knudson who were eleventh and twelfth last season. Sweden’s Casper Henriksson also won his 2024 Qualifying round at Macon in France, beating eventual champion Wiktor Przyjemski in the process, but struggled to replicate this form in the Finals and ended the year ranked thirteenth.
No strangers to the Qualifying stages, Germany’s Patrick Hyjek failed to make the cut at Terenzano in Italy last season and Czech racer Adam Bubba Bednář and Artjoms Juhno from Latvia were both knocked out of the competition at Ludwigslust.
Furthest travelled of the competitors, Mitchell McDiarmid will represent Australia on Saturday while Hungarian hero Zoltan Lovas will be hoping for strong home support to push him up the leaderboard and into the Finals.
The top four on Saturday will be joined by the eight qualifiers from Pardubice and Glasgow – along with three wild cards selected by the FIM SGP Commission, one local wild card and two track reserves chosen by the relevant National Federation – behind the tapes at the three Finals at Målilla in Sweden on 4 July, Riga in Latvia on 1 August and Vojens in Denmark on 12 September .
The action from Debrecen is due to get under way with the first Heat at 16:00 local time.
