Jaimon Lidsey is the FIM Speedway Under 21 World Champion after a near perfect performance in Pardubice on Friday. The Australian who is enjoying a great season with his Polish league club, Leszno was beaten only once during the meeting by Dominik Kubera in the qualifying races.
With the top eight riders progressing to the semi finals it was Lidsey and Dan Bewley who led the qualifiers and both duly won their semi final races ahead of Kubera and Latvian surprise Oleg Mikhailov. Home favourite Jan Kvech who had looked good in the earlier races was eliminated when he fell on the last bend of his semi after a great battle with Mikhailov.
But it was the Final which resolved the medal positions. This time Kubera was not quick enough at the start and was unable to repeat his earlier victory over Lidsey who completed his memorable meeting by claiming the gold medal by a comfortable margin.
Final Result:
1. Jaimon Lidsey (Australia)
2. Dominik Kubera (Poland)
3. Oleg Mikhailov (Latvia)
4. Dan Bewley (Great Britain)
There was no happy ending for the new Long Track champion Lukas Fienhage who was looking to take two world championships within a week. Last in his first ride he scored only five points and was never in contention. A similar fate awaited American Luke Becker whose evening started with a tape touching disqualification and ended with a retirement in his last race.
Australia has a proud record in this competition and Lidsey has added to a long list of previous winners from ‘Down Under’ including his mentor Leigh Adams, Jason Crump, Darcy Ward and Max Fricke who completed a great day for the Aussies by winning the Torun Grand Prix.
