After launching the FIM Medical Summit and revising the CMO licencing system and educational path at the beginning of 2024, the FIM CMI Commission and the FIM Academy have continued to develop educational materials for the doctors and the medical personnel involved in motorcycling.
Within this framework, the FIM is pleased to share with these professionals the FIM Medical Summit Insights, as well as new FIM Academy modules, videos and new checklists developed for medical briefings in Off-Road and Circuit Racing, which the FIM hope will help prepare CMOs from all disciplines for their essential role and future nominations.
The FIM Medical Summit Insights is a report to share valuable takeaways and highlights from the Summit, including the most important findings, emerging trends, and innovations presented during the Summit by the experts invited as guest speakers.
The Insights also includes in-depth discussions about the upcoming FIM Concussion Protocol set to be launched in 2025, focusing on the protocol's framework, implementation strategies, and expected impact on riders’ safety.
FIM CMI Director Dr David McManus reflected on the summit and subsequent Insights: “The Summit earlier in the year was a great success from my perspective and the feedback we have received to date has been universally positive regarding the format, the topics and the speakers. Equally we have also received some suggestions for important topics for the next summit and suggestions to increase the duration to facilitate more interaction between the participants.”
“Several important topics were covered including the sharing of experience and learning from our major championships last year as well as important medical topics and new technologies relevant to our work. A significant part of the Summit was devoted to considering concussion. This was very beneficial with presentations from renowned subject matter experts and the experience in other sports. This will inform the development and introduction of specific concussion assessment and management tools by the FIM for use in our sport.”
“An outcome of this has been the development of learning materials to share with particularly doctors and medical teams who are new to our sport. These include video presentations and written checklists that are designed to familiarise them with practical procedures and requirements for medical services at motorcycle races. I believe these will be very beneficial to new medical personnel and act as a refresher for more experienced medical teams. We will continue to update the learning materials and modules and appreciate the feedback and input from colleagues in this process.”
