FIM Enduro Vintage Trophy, Day 2: Italy take over lead

Day two of racing at the FIM Enduro Vintage Trophy (EVT) saw host nation Italy take over the FIM Vintage Veterans Trophy Team lead in Camerino. The defending champions now head Germany in second, with France close behind in third.

• Italy top the standings on day two to lead FIM Vintage Veterans Trophy Team classification
• France’s Stéphane Peterhansel (Yamaha) ends day two as the fastest rider

After topping the opening day of racing, the United States began day two looking to extend their lead at the top of the FIM Vintage Veterans Trophy Team standings. However, at the end of the opening special test it was France who had opened up an early lead over Germany, with Italy third and the United States dropping to fourth.

Completing special test three to end lap one, the positions had changed. Italy were now in full flow and had provisionally moved into the race lead ahead of Germany and France. Slipping down the leaderboard to tenth, the United States ran into trouble.

Italy claim top honours on day two

As the day wore on, Italy continued to extend their lead. After two laps, six special tests and one-hundred-and-fifty-kilometres of riding, the Italian trio of Enrico Tortoli (KTM), Tullio Pellegrinelli (Puch Frigeri) and Giorgio Grasso (Kramer) ended day two as winners, moving into the overall lead of the FIM Vintage Veterans Trophy Team competition.

Finishing over one-hundred-and-seven-points behind, Germany took today’s runner-up result and move into second overall. France too could be happy with their day’s work of third to claim third overall.

However, France can not afford to ease off just yet, with fourth-placed Czech Republic trailing them by only twenty-two points. Portugal complete the overall top five with fifth.

On day two, the battle for top honours in the FIM Vintage Silver Vase Team category was closely fought out between MC Manzano 3 and Pantera 1, with MC Manzano 3 taking the win by less than two points. GS Sorcu Verdi B completed an all-Italian lockout of the top three placings on day two.

Making no mistakes, Italy reached the end of day two in the FIM Vintage Women’s Club Team and will aim to keep that strong momentum rolling during the second half of the competition.

Peterhansel sets the pace on day two

Day two saw a familiar name top the time sheets in Camerino with enduro and Dakar legend Stéphane Peterhansel proving fastest. The fifty-eight-year-old Frenchman showed he is still super-smooth and fast on two wheels to take the win by twenty seconds on his Yamaha.

Behind him, the home crowd had a lot to cheer for, with Italy locking out the remainder of the top six places. Andrea Rastrelli (Maico) enjoyed a close battle with Giorgio Grasso (Kramer) to secure second place by less than two seconds.

Day three marks the second half of the four-day FIM Enduro Vintage Trophy. With a new seventy-kilometre course to the south of Camerino to be completed twice, the four-hundred-and-thirty competitors from sixteen nations face a new set of challenges tomorrow.

The FIM Enduro Vintage Trophy continues to take place over the coming days in Camerino, Italy ending on 7 September.
