When you are a regular on the FIM EnduroGP World Championship scene, switching gears to compete in the FIM Enduro Vintage Trophy (EVT) might not seem like an obvious thing to do. But, with this year’s EnduroGP series over, and at the request of the Catalan Motorcycle Federation, racing in the 2023 EVT is exactly what seasoned world championship campaigner Mireia Badia is doing.
Runner-up in the 2022 Women’s Enduro World Championship and more recently a podium finisher on both days at the final round of the 2023 EnduroGP series in Portugal, Mireia is embracing the old and trying something new.
“The idea to have a women’s team came from the Catalan Federation who called myself, Rosa Romero and Judit Sola and put this team together. We are the only women’s team so it’s great to have that support behind us. It’s something very different for me, but I’m really enjoying it.”
Unsurprisingly, as a rider that is used to competing on highly-capable modern-day motorcycles, riding a bike that’s forty-four years old is very much a new experience for Mireia.
“My vintage bike is so different to my normal race bike! The brakes, the suspension, it’s all so different – it’s another world! I’m racing a Bultaco Frontera 370 from 1978, a bike that’s a lot older than I am.”
Enjoying her time on a vintage bike, Mireia has one eye on the best result possible and the other on reaching the finish.
“As an EnduroGP rider, I always want to get a good result, so for sure I’m pushing for one! At the moment, I’m really having fun, I’m just looking to finish the race. I didn’t have any idea what the level of competition would be like, so I’m just taking things one step at a time, focusing on the finish.”
