MXGP’s newest phenomenon Yamaha Factory Racing Yamalube’s Romain Febvre wrapped up the 2015 FIM Motocross World Championship at the MXGP of The Netherlands, which was the sixteenth round of the eighteen round series.
Originating from Epinal, France, Romain Febvre is one of the most gifted racers in the world. The youngster, who only turned 23 years old on December 31st, started racing motocross at young age, but after a few injuries in his early teens the young Frenchman decided to switch from motocross to Super Moto.
After a few years of burning rubber on the road, in 2010, Febvre felt he had returned to full health and fitness, which left him with the desire to make a return to the dirt where his true passion lies. A year after swapping his Super Motard slicks for motocross knobblies, the talented Frenchman entered the premier amateur series, the European Championship EMX250 and won.
In 2012, Febvre entered the FIM Motocross World Championship MX2 where he finished 13th in the championship standings with a 5th place being his best race finish.
In 2013, he had a flying start to the season where he made his maiden MX2 podium appearance, but unfortunately broke his leg one round later. He then returned after a four round hiatus and managed to wind out the year in twelfth.
In 2014, Febvre embarked on his third MX2 world championship campaign where he made three podium appearances with the most memorable being the MXGP of Brazil where he topped the box for the first time in his career. At the end of the 2014 FIM Motocross World Championship MX2, Febvre was the bronze medalist.
The age rule in MX2 is based on the riders age as of January 1st. Febvre’s birthday is the 31st of December, therefore the talented French star had no choice but race the premier class MXGP.
Despite finishing third in the 2014 MX2 world championship, Febvre mentioned that Yamaha Factory Racing Yamalube was the only factory team that offered him a place, but it wasn’t something that bothered him as he felt great on the bike right from the first time he rode it.
After a tough winter, which saw the youngster battling a couple of injuries such as a broken upper arm and a hernia, Febvre remained confident in his ability and entered what was, has been and still is, the toughest and deepest season of FIM Motocross World Championship racing ever. While most of the hype at the start of the season surrounded the already acclaimed riders that already have multiple world titles under their belts, it wasn’t long before the rookie found his feet and started to front the field.
Five rounds into championship, at the MXGP of Spain, the 461 of Romain Febvre hit a couple of milestones when he led a number of laps and landed on the podium for the first time in his MXGP career. While those achievements alone were commendable for a rookie, the train didn’t stop there as he has since led 158 laps, which is the most out of anyone in the class, won 13 races, taken 6 grand prix overalls, has stood on the podium 11 times consecutively and is now, with two rounds remaining, the 2015 FIM Motocross World Champion!
