Faced with opposition from ACEA (the car industry association for Europe) and FIA Region One in Brussels, the EU Council of Ministers has given up on ISA. – Intelligent Speed Adaptation. A system that allows automatic speed reduction in a car via information from GPS and other technologies built into the vehicle.
The EU Council has now decided on, “ISA” but this time Intelligent Speed “Assistance” so the driver will not find the car being slowed automatically on entering a restricted road. Instead just a warning will be delivered.
Since 2006 the FIM has campaigned against any moves to propose ISA for motorcycles similar to that used in some cars. (For example, some of the Ford Galaxy models). FIM does not believe that any outside interference with the speed of a motorcycle by linking the engine management system to GPS satellites would ever be safe. – In particular when a motorcycle or scooter is banked over in a bend in the road.
Advisory warning systems of the kind now being proposed for cars may be possible for motorcycles. Many drivers and riders already have such systems via their smart phones or satellite navigation devices. The design of any new system must take account of the need to avoid distraction.
