Dakar 2014
Monday 13 January 2014
Eighth stage: Uyuni - Calama
Link section: 24 km – Special: 462 km – Link section: 215 km – Total: 701 km
Stormy weather bore down on the Dakar both at Salta and on the Salar de Uyuni, which was covered in water, forcing the riders to go around it rather than making a nice in-line start. But there was no shortage of spectacle as Uyuni has its own magic. Cyril Després made the most of it to clock up the best time of the Special which took the Dakar into Chile, making up for a slightly disappointing first week. Cyril moved quickly up on Marc Coma this morning and the two big guns of the discipline rode in convoy to make up time on Joan Barreda. The Honda rider stepped up the pace at the end of the Special but Després (Yamaha) managed to hang on to his place as the day’s leader with a lead of 2’10 over Barreda and 2’16 over Marc Coma. Helder Rrodrigues (Honda) took 4th place followed by Olivier Pain (Yamaha). The Sherco’s had problems today with Pedrero losing 14 minutes while Alain Duclos, dogged by mechanical trouble at the start of the special, lost 35, but managed to hang on to his fourth place overall.
