Czech FIM Speedway GP celebrates 25th year

The FIM Speedway Grand Prix series’ record-breaking event enters its 25th year in 2021 as the Czech Republic SGP returns to Prague’s Marketa Stadium on June 5.

SGP World Championship action first took place in the Czech capital in 1997 and the city has staged a round every year since, with Prague even defying this year’s coronavirus pandemic to host two SGP 2020 events.

Next year’s Czech Republic SGP will be the 26th round to take place at Marketa Stadium as the venue celebrates a record-breaking 25 seasons on the calendar.

Winning in Prague has become a lucky charm for the sport’s top stars, as 11 of the last 18 SGP winners there have been crowned world champion in the same season.

This year’s champion Bartosz Zmarzlik benefitted from this omen, winning both of the SGP 2020 rounds which took place at Marketa Stadium on September 18 and 19.

Paul Bellamy, Senior Vice President of Motorsports Events at IMG, is delighted to be returning to a venue which has become a firm favourite for visiting fans from around the world.

He said: “It wouldn’t be an SGP season without a trip to Prague. The fact that even a global pandemic couldn’t stop racing at Marketa Stadium underlines the dedication of our hosts AK Marketa and all those who make the event possible. The support we receive from the city of Prague is also outstanding.

“The Marketa Stadium gets better every time we visit and the Czech Republic SGP truly has become a highlight on the calendar as fans relish the chance to enjoy a night of thrilling racing in one of Europe’s finest city destinations.

“A win in Prague seems to bring good luck for the riders and we can’t wait to see who comes out on top on June 5.”
