Astana Expo FIM Ice Speedway Gladiators World Championship
Final 3
5th and 6th March 2016 – Berlin

Igor Kononov was the winner of the Final on the second day of racing in Berlin but the order at the top of the classification for the Astana Expo FIM Ice Speedway Gladiators World Championship still remains unchanged and the fight for the medal places has become even closer with only 2 points separating the top four contenders.

Dmitry Koltakov was a consistent scorer but failed to make the final four when he fell in his semi-final. He sits at the top of the Intermediate Classification with 100 points to his credit. Daniil Ivanov once again scored heavily but an uncharacteristic last place in Heat 13 cost him the chance to take the lead in the series. He was also relegated to third place in the Final but his 34 points over the two days keeps him in second place. Dmitri Khomitsevich followed his successful first day with another strong performance and remains fourth.

Franz Zorn continues to be the best of the non-Russians and was close to reaching the final before Kononov slipped past him on the last bend of his semi-final. He is still within striking distance of fifth place whilst the rest of the field are losing touch with the top tier.

Current standings after Final 3:

Day 1
The order at the top of the classification for the Astana Expo FIM Ice Speedway Gladiators World Championship remains unchanged after an evening of excitement at Horst Dohm Eis-Stadion on Day 1
Daniil Ivanov continued to relish his return to top form and was unbeaten through the qualifying races and semi-final. Surprisingly however he allowed his concentration to lapse during the Final when after fighting his way to the front he slid into the straw bales and was disqualified. In the restart Dmitri Khomitsevich took advantage of his second chance and took first place ahead of Koltakov and Kononov.

There were some spectacular crashes and Ove Ledström’s chances of progressing were not helped by a fall when he hit the straw bales on the exit to the second bend and was hit by the closely following Gunter Bauer. Fortunately, both avoided serious injury but the Swede’s total was restricted to 4 points.
Another Swede in the wars was Niklas Svensson who lost control on the start straight in Heat 4 and ran into the infield narrowly avoiding the infield marshals who were protected by straw bales. Niklas recovered to score 8 points but was unable to progress beyond the semi-final stage.

Standings after Day 1
