14-year-old Mads Hansen showed no signs of any nerves when under immense pressure he won his crucial final race, which saw the angelic looking young Dane crowned as the 2014 FIM Speedway 85cc Youth Gold Trophy Champion.
During a sweltering hot day on the superbly appointed 141-metre mini speedway track at Czestochowa in Poland, it was Mads that kept his cool. With his two main rivals, Frederik Jakobsen (The reigning 85cc Gold Trophy Champion) and Jonas Jeppesen having both dropped some surprise points, it meant Mads went to the start line in heat 20 knowing a race win would see him crowned as the new champion. For a while it looked like he would be facing a three-man run off for the title as he was holding second place, but he got another bit of the cherry when the referee was forced to stop the race when Swede Filip Hjelmand fell at the back and could not clear the track. Things looked even worse in the rerun as Mads completely missed the start, but he hunted down and passed both the other two riders in clinical style to claim the 85cc Gold Trophy title.
Frederik Jakobsen came out on top against Jonas Jeppeson in an additional heat to determine the other FIM medal positions, with both Danes in their last 85cc Gold Trophy event having now reached maximum age of 16.
Denmark completely dominated the mini speedway event once again. Led by the Danish Speedway legend and former World Champion Eric Gundersen as the DMU youth team manager, he arrived with 20 riders for the four-day Gold Trophy Championship in Czestochowa and the red and white Vikings managed to get a total 11 riders through the tough qualifying round and semi finals.
The whole event was a complete success, with the USKS Speedway Club at Czestochowa putting on a fantastic show on a perfect race track that provided some sensational speedway from the young riders. It was white hot action throughout with racing at times out of the top draw, but also laced with plenty of incidents, with the youngsters all so desperate to win. This all kept the English FIM referee Chris Durno extremely busy, as across the six meetings run to determine the championship, he was forced to make countless decisions, which saw him having to stage a total of 34 rerun races, due mainly to as many as 53 riders recoded as having fallen at some point, such was the intense nature of the racing!
