Google’s driver less car crashed again recently. But that is not the end of this new technology. Major car manufacturers are developing new systems that take away some, or all, of the driving task from human drivers.
The totally self- driving car may be some distance off but progress is rapid. What will this mean for the future of motorcyclists?
FIM is engaged in high level discussions with the European Union institutions in Brussels and with the United Nations Inland Transport Committee in Geneva.
The following key points have been set out:
No road where riders currently can use a motorcycle should ever be closed to us in the future as a result of the arrival of new technology cars. – Nobody wants roads where cyclists and pedestrians and users of public transport have access denied to them either!
There may be situations in the future on some roads – motorways for example – where a new dedicated lane is made for new technology cars and trucks. If this is the case then motorcycles should still be allowed on the other parts of roads with that type of lane.
Any new technology authorised for use on the roads must be brought in taking into account the needs of all other road users including motorcyclists.
Another part of this new development is “connected vehicles” – here there are bright prospects for improved safety. – Particularly at road junctions where motorists often pull out in front of riders. Additional warning systems for riders and drivers have the potential to reduce the number and severity of these collisions.
