Aoyama backs new series

Hiroshi Aoyama, the winner of the final FIM 250cc World Championship last season, has given his backing to the series which will replace it this year.

The new FIM Moto2 World Championship is set for its inaugural campaign in 2010, and Aoyama, who will race in the FIM MotoGP World Championship next season with Interwetten Honda, admits that while he is sad to see the passing of the 250cc era, he welcomes the change to Moto2.

"I like 250 because I have always ridden with a two-stroke since I started racing at five years old. So for 23 years I was racing with two-strokes. I love two-strokes," Aoyama told Crash.net.

"It is a pity we will not have 250 any more, but I also think the new Moto2 category will be very interesting because the engine is the same for everybody and you can change the chassis as you like."
