Earlier this week and ahead of this weekend’s MotoGP event at Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit, Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta hosted an important seminar regarding motorsport and sustainability. Organised by the Indonesian Motorcycle Association (IMI) within the framework of the sustainability panel of FIM Asia and supported by the FIM Academy, environmental concerns were discussed relating to now and in the future, as part of a social responsibility programme that has the aim of providing a legacy for the motorcycle community.
The seminar which included forty participants – ten of which were female - plus other online attendees who represented clubs, national stewards, media and commercial organisations, served as an introduction to Sustainability in Motorsport, with both the national and international federations inviting the public, and especially motorcyclists, to care about the environment.
The seminar’s overall theme and messaging proved to be highly positive and successful as it combined an understanding of motorsports within a sustainability programme, and the importance of environmental awareness.
Reinforcing the benefits of the seminar Eddy Saputra (Deputy of Sport Motorcycle) - CCR Member stated: “With this seminar, I hope the public and in particularly the motorcycle community will understand more about the importance of protecting the environment and the social responsibility programme. For example, implementing sustainable living, such as reducing carbon footprints and pollution, so that it can provide hope for a better future.”
“Not only focusing on emission control, the FIM sustainability programme has provided financial assistance to build public facilities (toilets and water systems) in two schools around the Mandalika circuit. On behalf of IMI president, Bambang Soesatyo, we would like to thank Kattia Juarez Dubon as FIM CID Director, who has travelled from Europe as a speaker for this seminar. We would also like to thank Jorge Viegas, as President of the FIM, who always supports the social activities of the Indonesian Motorcycle Association.”
Following the seminar Kattia met with the national sustainability stewards that are working with the recently formed sustainability commission, who can now count on a new edition of the FIM Sustainability Code which has been translated into Indonesian, to champion and empower their new responsibility. Indonesia is one of the countries participating in the FIM Academy mentorship programme.
Adding her own words Kattia Juarez Dubon, FIM CID Director explained: “I’m delighted to have participated in this seminar organised by IMI, which has been working intensively to establish their first-ever Sustainability Commission this year. I had the opportunity to exchange experiences and analyse the different situations we face in this field. Leaving an intangible legacy when we visit different countries and mentoring our National Federations is a priority in our overall sustainability strategy.”
